Our Classic Latex Shikibuton is a thinner version of our popular Classic Latex Mattress (which is 6" thick). It is comprised of a 3" latex core wrapped in a felted EcoWool textile and a layer of porous organic cotton cloth, then everything is enclosed in 100% cotton fabric.
This shikibuton (Japanese for thin sleeping cushion) is plush enough for using on the floor or a tatami mat all by itself, but we recommend layering it with at least one other shikibuton when used on a slatted platform frame to avoid feeling the slats through the latex.
For example, the combination in the photo to the right shows a Classic Latex Shikibuton on the bottom and a Cotton & Wool Shikibuton on the top. This combination is firm like a traditional cotton futon, but contours to the body more effectively than cotton alone.
In our showroom we feature a three-layer combination with a Classic Latex Shikibuton on the bottom, a Cotton Shikibuton in the middle, and a 4" Wool Topper on the top (we call it our 3 Layer System) which features the resilience of latex, the firmness of cotton, and the luxurious softness of wool.
Just like the thicker Classic Latex Mattress, we make two versions of the latex shikibuton: the "Classic," and the "Natural Classic." The Classic is made with blended Talalay-process latex (which is 20% natural and 80% synthetic) inside a standard cotton case, and the Natural Classic is made with all-natural Talalay-process latex inside 100% organic cotton case.
***We think the "firm" option is the most versatile choice for the latex shikibutons, but of course, either will work just fine.***

There is no boric acid powder (or any other kind of flame retardant) added to any part of our latex mattresses.
